One of Andy Warhol’s final projects before his relatively early death was a set of ten screen prints commissioned and published by art dealer and arts advocate Ronald Feldman. Born in the Bronx and raised on Long Island, Feldman worked as a corporate lawyer before quitting law to start Ronald Feldman Fine Arts in 1971. With a real enthusiasm for cutting edge art, he worked with some major avant garde figures including Joseph Beuys, Hannah Wilke, Chris Burden and of course Warhol. He and Warhol seemed to get on very well, unusual enough given that, since he was shot and almost died in 1968, Warhol had become very nervous about who came close to him, but he often visited Feldman’s Upper East Side semi-private gallery and made five portfolios of prints for him in the 1980s, including Ads in 1985.

Early on, the young Warhol, showing signs of artistic promise, went to the Carnegie Institute of Technology in his home city, Pittsburgh, graduating as a specialist in pictorial design. When he moved to New York he quickly built a reputation and became a busy, successful commercial artist, working in advertising, illustration and window dressing. Warhol was always open to others’ good ideas, and this particular commission may well have appealed to him because it brought him back to those days, days that were vital in shaping his entire approach to art, the art business and celebrity. The idea of Ads was to draw on advertising imagery that established and encapsulated iconic brands, from stars to cars, computers to perfumes.

Warhol had first learned about the print technique of photo-silkscreen in the summer of 1962, and quickly realised it was perfect for him. As he famously said: “I like things to be exactly the same over and over again.” Now he could take a photographic image, reduce it to its essential, graphic form and almost endlessly replicate it. The technique was not entirely mechanical, though, as each print was made by hand (Rupert Jasen Smith became his printmaker of preference). Warhol relished the nuances and glitches that crept into the process, meaning each print was unique, the same but different, a quality that could be enhanced by the varied use of colour and, as here, a doubling or ghosting of the main image. Warhol was among the first visual artists to realise that two features, supposedly inimical to fine art, were central to its appeal: familiarity and repetition. The linguist Samuel Jay Keyser has explored in great detail how repetition, and repetition with variation, are vital across the arts, visual, musical and literary. Warhol seems to have grasped that from the beginning of his career, when working as a commercial artist.

For Ads, he turned to a number of iconic figures and images. The early Apple logo of a segmented apple, Chanel’s No 5 fragrance bottle, the Paramount Studios peak logo, the Volkswagen Beetle, the cartoon Donald Duck, Judy Garland, and James Dean. Dean was only 24 when, driving his new Porsche 950 Spyder, he was killed in a crash (for which he was not to blame). Earlier that year his role as a troubled, troublesome teenager in Nicholas Ray’s Rebel Without a Cause established him as a universal symbol of teenage angst, and an enormously influential figure in popular culture to come, from fashion to music. His extraordinary screen presence, with its mixture of cool arrogance ameliorated by unmistakable, appealing vulnerability, is a model of complex masculinity. Warhol’s immediate source is a Japanese poster for the film, a choice that underlines the extraordinary dominance of American popular culture and the extent of Dean’s reach.

Explanation of cataloguing practice:

A work catalogued with the name(s) or recognised designation of an artist, without any qualification, is, in our opinion, a work by the artist in other cases, the following expressions, with the following meanings are used:

"Attributed to..." in our opinion probably work by the artist in whole or in part.

"Studio of...” in our opinion a work executed in the studion or workshop of the artist, possibly under his supervision.

"Workshop of..."

"Circle of..." in our opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence.

"Follower of...” in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but not necessarily by a pupil.

"Manner of..." in our opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date.

"After..." in our opinion a copy (of any date) of a work of the artist.

"Signed..." in our opinion the work has been signed/dated/inscribed by the artist. The addition of a question mark indicates an element of doubt.

"With signature..." in our opinion the signature/date/inscription is by a hand other than that of the artist.

"With date..."

"With inscription..."
